Fred Bergman, OSGKC member for more than 50 years, dies

Fred Bergman passed away early this morning. For more than 50 years, he was a dedicated member of the Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City.

Generous, wise and tireless in his commitment to pass on to others his knowledge about and enthusiasm for a plant he had learned to love while a student at MU, Fred rarely missed a monthly OSGKC meeting.

An email has been sent to all society members about his passing. More information will follow when it is available. [The photograph on the left was taken at our March 19, 2011 meeting and is published on the blog.]

  1. Fred will be greatly missed…Last fall he gave me a plastic bag with some rhizomes of his Habenaria rhodocheila. He also gave me precise instructions on how to pot it and care for it during the long winter. Today, for the first time, it bloomed. Bloom on, Fred! — Jami Parkison

Fred was so kind and so funny. He leaves behind a greenhouse filled with his beautiful orchids, amazing red wood bark and lots of love. He touched my heart!
