January 9, 2011 program: David Taylor on orchid taxomony

[A message from Glenn, OSGKC Program Chair.]

Happy New Year, everyone.

Our January meeting will be at the Broadway United Methodist Church, January 9. Beginners will meet at 1:00 pm and will be hosted by Julie Morrison. The business meeting will be at 2:00.

Our speaker, David Taylor, who will begin at 3:00, is a biologist currently working for the USDA in Lincoln, NE. David’s professional interests are in evolution and population genetics, and he is currently working on flies and their impact on livestock production. His topic will be the philosophy of taxonomy (if you’re like me, I can hear the groans already- but bear with me – you’ll enjoy his talk) and why orchid classification is in a state of flux, and not about the specific changes within any one group.

David has spoken to us previously about pest control, and I expect a lively and informative discussion. I hope to see you all Sunday.
